How to be Excommunicated from the Mormon Church

THE SEPTEMBER SIX

'THE LDS CHURCH SANCTIONS SIX PROMINENT SCHOLARS'

Such was an example of the one of the headlines reporting the disciplinary action which covered newspapers throughout the Central Western States of the United States of America, and also reached as far as New York and Washington during the months of September and October 1993.

Relatively old news now - but still indicative of the mainstream Church's move to the restriction of scholarly and strong historical study for its membership.

Why the newspaper headlines? Well, the only reason that these individuals made headline news is that they were prominent scholars - many, many others, hundreds and thousands in fact, have received the same treatment by the mainstream Church, not just in Salt Lake, but throughout the world, but, because in the main, these were not well known, the press, and people in general have not heard of them.

The six prominent scholars mentioned above were as follows:-

1. D.Michael Quinn -

Historian, and Former B.Y.U. Professor. He has written at least six articles for the "Ensign", and many for the Church owned journal - "B.Y.U. Studies". He is most well known for his extremely competent articles on Church sanctioned plural marriages after the manifesto of 1890.
Michael Quinn also has been excommunicated in his third church court, simply because he has written factual church history which he refuses to whitewash to please leaders.

2. Avraham Gileadi

Author of The Book of Isaiah: A New Translation With Interpretive Keys from the Book of Mormon . He was excommunicated on September 15, 1993 for apostasy: the reason was given that his books interpreting Mormon scripture challenged the exclusive right of leaders to define doctrine. He was later re-baptised and even wrote another book along the same lines, no doubt under tight scrutiny of his Mormon leaders this time.



3. Paul Toscano -

Salt Lake Attorney. Also writer, together with his wife Margaret, of many articles, and a book entitled - "Strangers in Paradox." He spoke at the 1993 Sunstone Symposium and entitled his talk "All is Not Well in Zion: False Teachings of the True Church."
Paul Toscano was excommunicated on September 19, 1993 for apostasy: he criticized the authoritarianism of church leaders, advocated feminist theology, and refused to follow the stake president's request not to speak at the Sunstone Symposium.


4. Lavina Fielding Anderson -

Lavina Fielding Anderson was excommunicated and has lived ever since in Mormon limbo.... Anderson was never informed exactly what her 1993 ‘apostasy’ consisted of. But everyone knows that she is being punished for delivering a paper... that compiled data on more than one hundred examples of church repression against intellectuals...


5. Maxine Hanks -

“Maxine Hanks is a writer and frequent speaker on feminist topics who was excommunicated for urging that the LDS Priesthood be opened to women. Another presumed provocation was her editing of a 1992 Signature Books anthology, Women and Authority: Re-emerging Mormon Feminism, in which contributors discuss female priesthood and another of the hierarchy’s least favorite topics, adoration of Mormonism’s Mother in Heaven...

6. Lynne Kanavel Whitesides -

“Lynn Kanavel Whitesides, then president of the Mormon Women’s Forum, was similarly chastised for her public discussion about women’s priesthood and the Mother in Heaven...

So, obviously the members cannot have any divergent views from the prescribed teachings of the Mormon church, or they face sanctions, punishments, and excommunication: JUST FOR THINKING, TALKING, AND WRITING. Are these things considered sins in any other church? Would they have been considered sins by Methodists, Catholics, Lutherans or Baptists?

It seems quite clear to me that each and every one of these people were subjected to ecclesiatical abuse---they refused to be controlled in EVERY aspect of their lives and they were ex'd for their failure to submit to the authority of the church--plain and simple.

Here's my problem: What would Jesus Do?

The Mormon Church cannot go about sanctioning its members for exercising freedoms given to them by the constitution of the United States. THIS IS NOT IRAN!!!! It's not even old-time Utah anymore. And don't kid yourselves into thinking that these people are the only ones out of 12 million members who have ever been dealt with in this manner. I have also felt the threat of sanctions by stake authorities, just for diverging off of the planned teaching manuals in Primary class. I dared to use internet resources to assist in the lesson planning, and presented it in front of visiting stake presidency, only to later be condemned for my use of "outside resources" and to stick to the manual only in the future. I thought I had did a thorough and complete presentation, the kids enjoyed the lesson for once, and all I got in return was personal attacks for my failure to remain humble and accept the lessons as presented in the manual as 'sufficient'.

That was the first inkling for me that the church was overly concerned with how much influence they can maintain over individual's thoughts and personal opinions. I didn't learn about the September Six until I had already left, but it was still shocking to learn that people were getting kicked out of fellowship with their church, neighbors, and families just for publishing, speaking, and thinking aloud. The church sanctioned them for failure to comply to the wishes of the church, not for the content specifically, but for daring to express their opinions in the first place. Each member is apparently "allowed" to hold individual opinion, as long as they don't write it down, or share it with others. It screams BRAINWASHING to me.

The LDS church sends mixed messages to its members constantly. It's designed to keep the members guessing as to what actions will gain praise and what actions will gain condemnation. Take these quotes for example:


1st Message – Think for yourself:

“President Joseph Smith read the 14th chapter of Ezekiel – said the Lord had declared by the Prophet [Ezekiel], that the people should each stand for himself, and depend on no man or men in that state of corruption of the Jewish Church – that righteous persons could only deliver their own souls – applied it to the present state [1842] of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – said if the people departed from the Lord, they must fall – that they were depending on the Prophet, hence were darkened in their minds, in consequence of neglecting the duties devolving upon themselves...”

“What a pity it would be, if we were led by one man to utter destruction! Are you afraid of this? I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blink self-security, trusting their eternal destiny in the hands of their leaders with a reckless confidence that in itself would thwart the purposes of God in their salvation, and weaken the influence they could give to their leaders, did they know for themselves, by the revelations of Jesus, that they are led in the right way. Now here are some quotes that seem to make the opposite true. What is the correct thing to do? Can members express themselves or not? Where does the church stand TODAY, as opposed to the beginnings of the 'restoration of the fullness of all things'?

There is but one man upon the earth, at one time, who holds the keys to receive revelations for the Church, and who has the authority to write doctrines by way of commandment unto the Church.”

Will any member of the LDS Church speak out ever again? How will they know what is allowed and not allowed, unless they constantly "check in" with their bishop, stake president, or others within the church?

I can't see how members can claim they are free to think and act according to their own conscience, when it seems quite clear that doing so will get you excommunicated and used as an example to others to keep the dissention at a minimum.

They don't WANT difference of opinion...they want CONFORMITY of THOUGHT. If you aren't for them, you are against them....and failure to submit to their demands of silence results in removal of your "blessings". It's a huge sacrifice for an individual to have to choose between following the facts, trusting their own instincts, or casting aside all thoughts and facts that are contrary to whatever philosophies the church is touting at the time. This means, you will always have to ask what the church's views are on any given subject, so you can be sure to align yourself correctly with their views, and make sure you are in compliance with their teachings so that you can continue to be worthy in their eyes, and partake of their promised 'blessings' in exchange for your obedience.

If you would take two minutes and realize that what you know today to be true would have been taught as completely false a generation ago, then you might understand why people like me take the time and energy to write, speak and post about these major shifts in doctrine and attitudes. We are all out here, speaking out against the LDS church, because they claim authority over people to dictate to them how to act, dress, believe and behave. This is about as close to living in a 'religious state' as you get in countries like IRAN. It is the philosophies of man, masquerading as "new and improved Christianity". It is the LDS church who lies in wait to deceive...
